W.H. Kiwanis Club presents check to Healthy Start Healthy Start Coalition officials Holly Parker and Gloria Comacho receive an $1,800.00 check from Suzie Moraco and Roger Crabill. The money has purchased 20 cribs and 100 Back to Sleep reminder oneses. The outfits promote placing sleeping infants on their backs to prevent Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). The Coalition, through its Beds 4 Babies Project , has already distributed 300 cribs in our area and have another 100 left. Holly Parker from Healthy Start recently spoke to our Club and provided some insights into the local mortality rates for SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.) The one piece creepers carry a reminder message Back To Sleep (and our Kiwanis logo!). Most of the co-sleeping incidents occur when the infant has no other safe place to sleep than with an adult or older sibling due to economic necessity rather than bonding. Our underwriting of these cribs and infant outfits, combined with the parenting education efforts from Healthy Start, will go a long way toward providing a much safer infant sleep environment in our immediate area. W.H. Kiwanis has participated in the Back To Sleep initiative in years past.
