WINTER HAVEN - The Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven is now known as one of the top Kiwanis clubs in the world.
At the 92nd Annual Kiwanis District Convention in Orlando last week, the Winter Haven chapter was named the Florida Club of the Year for 2007-08, and the Florida District was named the top Kiwanis district internationally.
Les Adams, the Winter Haven Kiwanis Club president for 2007-08, accepted the award Friday. "I about fell down," he said. And as for being recognized as the top club among the best clubs, he said, "It put another lump in my throat." It is the second time the club has received the top state honor since its inception in 1935. This time, the club was recognized for the 265 service projects it finished in the 2007-08 year and the 8,187 hours its members volunteered. The club worked on several programs to help local children, including Every Child a Swimmer, Reading is Fundamental, Winter Haven Youth Sports and Kiwanis Park.
Suzie Moraco, a past president of the Winter Haven Kiwanis Club, praised the members' willingness to give back. "You do a project and you get tons of volunteers," she said. "I've never been around a club that is so giving of their time," Adams said.
Kelly Casey, the 2007-08 Winter Haven Kiwanis Club secretary, put together the application for the award. Moraco said the application is evaluated on the club's services to local youth, as well as its community service, school club sponsoring, international understanding, public relations, and sponsorship of school clubs, including Key Club and K Kids. "It means a heck of a lot to our club," Moraco said. "It validates what we're doing."
The local club celebrated the recognition Tuesday at its weekly meeting. The club meets each Tuesday, from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., in the Garden Ballroom at Olde Towne Square, located at the corner of Third Street and Avenue D, N.W., in Winter Haven. kara.phelps@newschief.com

Good Relationships Are a Contact Sport !

Whether you are talking friendships or business relationships making effective and sincere contacts are a must for success! So says this week’s speaker Susan Fleming, Marketing Specialist with ElectronicMarketingSuccess (EMS).
Her strategies are based on 3 keys:

Cultivate relationships – that means follow up and follow through without micro managing.
Become indispensable – deliver on what counts most to those in the relationship.
Adopt a laser focus – Eliminated perceived indifference and that takes a commitment that sees the individual feel important.

The objectives are to have a thriving relationship well beyond one that just survives.

One tool is to concentrate on the 20% of effort that gets you 80% of the success, be it business or personal interactions.

A couple of great quotes she offered :

“People will forget what you said. People will forget what you did. But people will never forget how you made them feel.”  - Maya Angelou and for the business world “ There is nothing more useless as doing efficiently that which should not have been done at all.” - Peter Drucker by Tom Dryden

  County Commissioner, District 4 Speaks

Our own Jean Reed, who represents east Winter Haven and eastern Polk, was our speaker at this week’s meeting. She caught us up on the county budget status and programs they are trying to salvage and/or find financial support. Polk’s high rate of poverty makes it more vulnerable than some to downturns in revenues. Health care and social programs for the poor are a major need and yet faced with significant revenue shortfalls. Other projects, like the Polk Historic Museum, non-essential but highly desired by the citizens are hoped to be spared complete elimination. Over half the budget goes for infrastructure and little can be done to reduce those expenditures, although some road and bridge projects may be delayed.

While raising taxes has been avoided, Jean alluded to the next two years being difficult financial ones for Polk County. By Tom Dryden

Our program on Tuesday Sept. 15 was Les Adams conducted the annual club assessment. This a requirment by Kiwanis International for each club as they enter their new year. It is meant to give the club an assessment by its members on things that require work to improve the club. Below is a complied chart of the assessment.

Also during this meeting incoming President Michelle Forsythe gave an overview of her committee chairmen and requested that all members sign up for a committee. As Bettie Hoosier use to say, Don't make me call you.

Committee Chairman Training

Incoming President Michelle Forsythe conducted a training session for her committee chairmen for the 2009 – 2010 year. The training was held at the Havendale Christian Church and ran from 8:30 to 11:00 am. Michelle covered the things she would like to accomplish during her year. She and Secretary Kelly Casey went over the committee chairmen’s responsibilities. They went over the proposed budget that was available to the chairmen. She presented club handout that will be given to each member.

Club Secretary Kelly Casey then conducted a training session on the monthly club reporting to International. He showed the committee chairmen how to get into the club report, how to make entries and what needs to be reported. We will be receiving a new reporting format from International for the upcoming year. Rather than being able to report on everything we do we will only be able to report on the top three projects each month. Members present were Larry & Michelle Forsythe, Joe Schroeder, Karen Phillips, Kelly Casey, Amamda Nicholson, Fred & Betty Putney, Kat MacCalla Rodney Chauncey and Valerie Tillman. By Joe Schroeder

“OPERATION JUMP START”

“Operation Jump Start” was set up by the Florida District to encourage Kiwanis Clubs to recruit a minimum of one new member per month for the months of June, July, August, and September.  Every club that processes at least one new member in this 4 months period will receive a banner patch. As the Club of the Year for 2007 – 2008 we continued with that same enthusiasm by induction one member each month. In June we inducted  Glen Heller, July Patrick O’Donnell, August Erin Sutyle and September JoAnn Schaffer. We are probably one of the few clubs in the Florida District to qualify for “Operation Jump Start.” As we enter a new Kiwanis Year we need each of you to ask one person to join our club and help President Michelle Forsythe have an outstanding 2009 - 2010 year.

Jo Ann Schaffer is inducted by Bill Doty, Michelle Forsythe and Pres. Larry. Jo Ann is the Managing Director of The Women’s Resource Center. She took the place of former member Cynthania Clark. Welcome to the club JoAnn. by Joe Schroeder

More Than Public Speaking

Our speaker this week educated us on Toastmasters principles and purposes. Beverly Lerner, Workshop Instructor for Winter Haven Toastmasters, demonstrated for us that there was a good bit more to Toastmasters training than just improving public speaking skills. Beverly has been a member of Toastmasters for 21 years and written numerous articles on public speaking. Toastmasters, founded in 1924, are the largest worldwide not-for-profit organization dedicated to communications leadership.

        Their primary objectives :

v Gain confidence in public speaking

v Learning to lead in a business environment

v Clarify goals and objectives

v Develop organizational and time use skills

v Build strategic thought processes

v Bring inner peace to the individual
