Maya Gardner
2013 WHHS Key Club Gould-Parker Memorial Scholarship
2015-2017 WHHS Key Club President (2 years)
2014-2015 WHHS Key Club Secretary

Maya Gardner not only excelled as a leader and scholar, she also has a long history of service to her community through the Kiwanis family. After joining the K-Kids at Brigham Academy in fifth grade, she became a founding member of the Builders Club at Jewett Middle Academy and is the only student, to date, to have maintained continuous membership in K-Kids, Builders Club and Key Club for 8 years. She logged more than 250 community service hours organizing projects such as food collections, campus cleanups, and book drives, mentoring elementary students, and volunteering at church and school.

She stated in her essay on the merits of high school community service, “Community service in high school impacts the hearts and minds of students as they gain a passion for making a difference and a heart of compassion for their communities. High school is often considered one of the roughest times in a person’s life...However, when students begin doing community service, they work with other volunteers for the same cause and develop empathy when learning about some of the issues happening within their community…Students who perform community service also develop a more caring attitude toward the world around them...” Maya served as President of Key Club for 2 years and represented Winter Haven High School at the National Competition for FCCLA - Family and Community Career Leaders of America.

Maya's positive spirit and attitude carried her to success in the classroom as well, where she qualified as a Florida Academic Scholar and member of National Honor Society. She achieved a well-rounded educational experience, balancing the rigor of Advanced Placement courses with the the industry certifications of the Café Bleu culinary program and the study of performing arts as a member of the Pride of Winter Haven High School band.

The Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven is proud of her commitment and dedication to serving her home, schools, and community. We wish her the best as she pursues her dreams at the University of Central Florida’s Rosen College of Hospitality Management. She wrote about her high school experience, “I can’t wait to bring the leadership skills that I have gained into the rest of my life.” We can’t wait either.
