2017 Winter Haven Kiwanis Foundation Key Club Scholarship recipient
Cindy Nguyen was too busy to be an active member of Key Club as a student at Lake Region High School because she was actively serving others through commitments to her home, school, and community. She maintained part-time employment working 20 hours per week during the school year at her family’s business and more hours in summer as a lifeguard. Her service activities included delivering meals for Meals on Wheels, assisting with language classes for young children ages 4-12, and volunteering with St Joseph Catholic Church. She displayed her ability to effectively manage her time and commitments by maintaining a 4.314 GPA and successfully completing multiple Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses.
Cindy stated in her essay on the merits of high school service, “The merits of high school community service are, but not limited to, lasting connections with the people, a feeling of the solidarity for the town, and a sense of being a part of the whole community. Volunteer service allows students to see the beginnings of quality engagements with the community. Being able to provide service to the community gives students impressions of what life as a dedicated citizen will be like. It helps to establish the foundation for participation within the region that the student will be able to rely on later in life. Seeing what can be achieved as a volunteer supports the feeling of being a valued member of society.”
The Kiwanis Club of Winter Haven is proud of Cindy's accomplishments in high school and we hope to see continued success as she attends the University of Florida in pursuit of a career in Medicine, joining her older brother as the first generation in their family to attend college.
